How to Reduce Manual Handling When Positioning Patients in Bed

Manual handling processes are a common part of caring for patients and individuals who don’t have the capacity to properly care for themselves. However, it’s also important to note that manual handling can be dangerous when tasks are not completed with the utmost care and attention. Ideally, manual handling processes should either be carried out to the highest possible standards or not at all.

One of the most common problems associated with manual handling in hospital and care environments occurs when nurses and doctors are positioning patients in bed to reduce the risk of pressure ulcers and bed sores. The more an individual can be moved into different positions throughout the day, the less likely they are to suffer from common issues with discomfort. With an electronically powered system, there’s no need for multiple carers to drop what they’re doing in a hospital setting so that they’re available to re-position a patient once every two hours. Instead, a single person can use the sheet to move the patient into prone, lateral, and supine positions.

Not only do these simple tools take manual handling out of the equation, and therefore reduce the risk for the patient and the nurse, but they also give service users a more calm and consistent turning experience too, whenever they need to be moved to prevent sores, apply slings, and so on.

Repositioning is an important part of ensuring the safety and comfort of bedridden patients. However, it’s also one of the most problematic parts of a nurse or care provider’s job. Moving a bedridden patient can be an exhaustion and often risk-filled process, that requires the help of multiple professionals at once. This means that, unfortunately, nurses and other professionals have less time to focus on helping other patients.

By taking manual handling out of the situation with a motorized solution, it’s possible for care providers to ensure that all of their patients get the care and comfort that they need at the press of a button, without the need for excessive work. All a nurse would need to do is press the button the control to move the patient into the correct position, then use cushions to carefully prop the different limbs and joints of the individual in the right place for the ultimate level of comfort.
